If someone told you they got Reddit Gold in 2026, they are not telling you they got a $5.99 ad-free premium subscription. They are telling you a reader sent them one of the new post-September-2023 gold units, which now converts directly to cash. The old Reddit Gold is gone. The old Reddit Premium membership still exists under a different name. The old Reddit Coins are gone. The awards system that let redditors gild your comment with a trophy icon is gone. Every legacy "what is Reddit Gold" article that was accurate in 2022 is wrong now.
On September 25, 2023, Reddit announced the Contributor Program. That program replaced the entire coin-award-gold economy with a single cash-convertible unit also called gold. Readers buy gold. Readers give it to the posts and comments they like. Creators who receive gold convert it to dollars at 90 cents or 1 dollar per unit, depending on karma tier. This is the "Reddit Gold" every current guide is describing, and it is why the word still shows up on Reddit in 2026 while meaning something completely different from what it meant in 2022.

Yes, but the name points at a completely different product than it did before September 2023. In 2026, Reddit Gold is a digital unit readers buy and give to posts or comments, priced from $1.99 for one gold to $49 for 25 gold. Reddit keeps roughly half the purchase price. The creator who receives the gold can convert it into cash at 90 cents per gold (standard tier) or 1 dollar per gold (top tier), provided they are enrolled in the Contributor Program. Below the 10-gold threshold, earnings roll forward until you cross it, so a post that gets 3 gold in June and 8 gold in November will trigger a payout. Who qualifies for the Reddit Contributor Program?
Eligibility is narrow and has not widened much since launch. A contributor must be 18 or older. The account must be 30 days old or more. The program is not a livable income for most enrolled accounts. Does buying Reddit upvotes affect gold earnings?
